LNWH Charity helps to make precious memories for families
Nov 20, 2023
When you lose a loved one, treasured memories are so important. That’s why LNWH Charity were delighted to fund memory boxes for Meadow House Hospice patients.
Sharon Meek, palliative care occupational therapist and Priscah Kago-Guede, bereavement service manager said: “When patients are coming to the end of their life, thoughts often turn to the loved ones they are leaving behind, particularly parents with children.
“Creating a memory box is a way of maintaining continuing bonds and relationships.
“Memory boxes are very individual to the person they are being made for. With the support of staff, they can be created for loved ones, such as a child, grandchild, partner, parent or sibling. It can contain anything that evokes meaningful memories such as objects, photos, stories, voice recordings or favourite perfume. It can form attachments for the future such as cards, passing down jewellery, or words of encouragement.
“Though creating a memory box is not for everyone, it should be equitable. Our hope and aim for the future are that everybody approaching the end of their life should be offered the opportunity to create a box of memories for their loved ones.
“It can help those we love understand their feelings, support them through the grieving process, provide comfort and find ways forward with hope for the future."
“The lovely thing about memory boxes is that whoever receives them can open them every day, week or year, and happy memories will come flooding back.”
