OUR VALUES
- Care and respect for the people we serve
- Willingness to listen to peoples needs
- Commitment to professional development and being a good employer
- Partnership with all organisations that contribute to health and wellbeing
- Flexibility, collaboration and mutual support
- Energy and creativity
The underlying objectives are the improvement of health, the reduction of inequalities and the improvement of service quality. Particular challenges lie in: responding to the demands of a diverse and mobile population, offering consistently high standards of primary care, developing flexible and sensitive options for the management of long-term conditions, and reducing reliance on acute provision. Achieving all these objectives requires a sophisticated approach to commissioning, which recognises the importance of partnership and collaboration as well as the benefits of competition and choice.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines palliative care as ‘the total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Control of pain, of other symptoms, and of psychological, social and spiritual problems is paramount. The goal of palliative care is the achievement of the best possible quality of life for patients and their families’.
End of life care is taken to mean the services provided to support those with advanced, progressive, incurable illness to live as well as possible until they die. It enables the supportive and specialist palliative care needs of both patient and family to be identified and met throughout the last phase of life and into bereavement.
